Richard's Stone Garden
This site will follow the creation of my zen/stone garden.
Pan of backyard
This how the garden looks as of 7-13-10. About the same except my friend Craig can be seen among the stones now. We got the upper standing stones in this spring and then small stones to balance on them. Some other balancing stones have been in place for more than a year. The yard is a little weedy and I continue to kill back them back. There is no water to this area so, hopefully, nothing will grow in the future. I plan to place flat stone in the lower walkway and pea gravel around the large rocks. Bark will be placed in other places. The whole area will have weed stop under the cover. Notice the shadowy form in the lower right. That is a chipper shreder. It helps to chew up the cuttings from other parts of the yard.
sunset 8-5-10
It's not often we see such dramatic sunsets. This one was rich with color and cloud designs.
Cookie eating lettuce 6-29-10
Yes, Cookie, one of our cats loves lettuce. She only eats red leaf. Sometime she chomps it right out of the bag.
Loading car at brick yard
I usually pick up 20 landscape retaining wall brick each week. Over the years I have moved several pallets of brick from this yard to mine. The workers at the brick yard know me so well that when they see arrive they get the invoice ready and I write them a check for the same amount as last week. At time they add some damaged bricks because they know I will have use for them.
Two poppies
We have a good poppie crop this year. They have spread to other parts of the garden. The pink poppies are fewer in number this year. We save the seed and add it to many recipes and it add a different taste. These are about 7 inches wide.
Smokie 4-up
This is Smokie. She is a small cat with a big heart. She plays hard then sleeps hard. Her favorite thing to do is play fetch with her toys. We will throw them and she will run back with it. Where she picked that up, who knows. In the mornings she likes to lick our toes while we are getting the breakfasts.
Row of Flowers
This is a sample of flowers we have growing the summer of 2010. The summer started off cool and wet and now is hot and dry. We are using soaker hoses to save water.
frontyard from driveway
This is a view of our fron yard when the roses are in full bloom. The day lillies are about to bloom too. This was during a good rose year. When we have a cool wet spring the roses do well. Maybe if you put your nose close enough to the screen you too can smell them.
Images of jody in garden
Here we see Jody happily weeding her garden. The red roses really came back this year. They are very healthy. We always have the yellow California poppies. They bloom until the first frost. The purple rose was quite nice this year, too.
Row of Balancing Rocks
As stones are added to the garden I begin balancing smaller rocks on them. Some fall in a week...some fall in a month and some are still standing.
looking up the side yard
At this time, the garden was behaving. We did not have too many weeds. Once we got the fence up we were able to make the yard our own. The folks next door can do whatever they want to their side.
Front yard in winter
Yes, it does snow here in Idaho. Some years we can several feet of snow. We know that the plants are winter hardy and will come back in the spring. Notice the trellis. It was first to be put in the yard. My father in law came up from SLC one weekend and helped put in some posts. The birds and squirrels love to perch and run back and forth and eat the rose hips. It was cold that day.
